What is Flexique?
Flexique is a fun and innovative product developed by Marilyn and Joe Bawol and the sugar art world has been forever changed. I caught up with Marilyn and Joe at the That Takes the Cake show in Austin, TX.
I adore this product! It is a unique product that allows your decorating medium to flex. Flexique transforms your original medium into a flexible, longer lasting element to add to your decorating arsenal. They have added to the line and now carry an Instant Lace and Glue.
Marilyn shared that Flexique can be used to create edible fabric, flexible wafer paper, and flowers, among a few others. You can also create edible, flexible lace. You can crumple the finished product and it doesn’t break. Think of it like gummy bear gelatin texture, when set. For some great ideas on how to use this product, view the Project Idea Gallery.
One of the best advantages of this product is that it sets up quickly and never loses its flexibility, even after sitting out in the air for days or months! One of the most recent uses of the product is for body “paint.” You can view a video of this use. It has also been used to make clothing.
But the real gem is to see it in action for yourself. Once you begin to see how it works and learn of all the endless possibilities, your sugar art world becomes even more expansive with all the possible uses for this great product.
How to Use
Flexique is so easy to use. You just follow the directions by mixing the dry and wet ingredients together and allow to set. When you are ready to use, you gently heat it in the microwave to melt it and apply to your medium. If you would like to watch a video on how to prepare the product, you can view the instructions and watch a video on it. Colors and flavors can even be added, if desired. When you aren’t using it, you can store it in the freezer to extend its life. It will mold if left out for long periods of time. After all, it is a food product.
Try it!
The possibilities of this product are extensive. You can even add it to other products like gumpaste, isomalt and chocolate to “increase working time and create lasting pliability.” Don’t be afraid to give it a try, you will be elated when you discover what you can create with it. In addition, help with ideas and product usage is available at their website and YouTube channel. So, there are no excuses!
You may also catch Marilyn and Joe at a cake show near you in the vendor area or take a class with Marilyn. Be sure to stop by and see what new things Marilyn is doing with this product. They are more than happy to show you the product in action and answer any questions you have.
You can also purchase this product directly on the Flexique website.
